The Balancing Act

A Day In The Life | 0 comments

This week has been busy.

This morning, I’m finally able to exhale a little bit.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been able to make some significant progress up two massive print design projects.

It’s been hard to focus on anything else.

These projects have taken up a ton of creative energy, and honestly, last night, I was felling pretty drained.

If you’ve ever been knee-deep in client work, you know how easy it is to get so focused on delivering great results.

So much so… that everything else—especially marketing and outreach—gets pushed to the side.

But here’s the reality…

If we don’t keep showing up and promoting our services while we’re busy, we’ll wake up in a few weeks with an empty project pipeline, stressing to find the next gig.

That’s the cycle that leads to the dreaded feast-or-famine rollercoaster.

Anyone “been there, done that”?

So, how do we avoid it?

Here’s something that’s helped me…

Systemize your marketing.

I call it the Pebble Principle.

I teach this system inside my Design Business Accelerator.

BTW… doors will be opening soon.

Just like we create processes for client work, we need a system for staying visible—even when we’re busy.

That could mean:

✅ Setting aside 15 minutes a day to send a follow-up email to a past client.

✅ Keeping a list of potential clients to reach out to when you have a spare moment.

✅ Automating parts of your marketing so it runs even when you don’t have time.

Here’s what it doesn’t mean:

⛔️ Icky-salesy cold calling.

⛔️ Creating/posting content daily on a gazillion social channels.

⛔️ Learning a shiny, new tool or trend.

The goal is to make marketing a habit, not something you only do when you’re desperate for work.

Building a habit is like a muscle.

The more consistent you become, the stronger the muscle becomes.

And, muscles develop memory over time, which makes it automatic and instinctive.

Listen… I know it’s tough when you’re swamped.

But trust me—it’s worth it.

The freelancers and soloprenuers who build a steady, thriving business are the ones who keep marketing, even when they’re busy serving clients.

What’s one thing you can do today to make sure you have work lined up for next month?

If you’d like some help, consider getting on the waitlist for my Design Business Accelerator and get a special invitation before I open the doors to the public.

You’re growing… even if no one sees it yet.

The flowers are starting to bloom here in Kansas — and they are absolutely gorgeous. But guess what? For the past several months, those same flowers were invisible, hidden underground, preparing for the right moment to pop through the surface.Ever feel like your...

Doors open when you do this one thing…

In 1990, I got my first paid freelance gig.I was still in high school when a friend referred me to someone looking for a simple pencil sketch of a dove.It wasn’t a huge project — just a small illustration for a publication — but to me, it felt like the biggest...
