Building a Wall versus Starting From Scratch

A Day In The Life | 0 comments

When I started freelancing full-time, I was caught in the feast or famine cycle.

I would work hard for a period to find work.

Then, I was hard working (for low prices) to get the work done.

Only to find myself grinding at the end of project for more work.

I felt like I was never getting ahead.

I felt like I was starting from scratch every month.

Raising my prices helped a ton.

I was able to start earning more each month.

However, even with better prices, I was still starting each month at zero.

Then, after a few years, I realized I had the opportunity to sell some services that I could bill for monthly.

And, the amazing part of this realization meant that some of these services were high profit.

Meaning, for the first time, I was able to start building a legitimate business with predictable cash flow.

I started out slow, but little by little, I was able to start adding recurring revenue bricks to my business wall.

Month over month, year over year.

I started to add more low-effort, high-profit recurring services to my business.

In 2021, I was looking back over my financial reports in Quickbooks Online.

I was shocked to see the lifetime value one of my favorite recurring clients (from 2006).

My first invoice for them was $3,500 back in 2006.

But, over the years, I had stacked up a whopping $1.2M in recurring invoices.

Today, recurring revenue is my favorite kind of revenue.

It’s profitable.

It’s predictable.

It is freedom-giving.

It has allowed me to sleep at night, knowing my monthly bills are paid.

I wake up each day looking for new opportunities to put another brick on my recurring revenue wall of my design and marketing business.

I’m excited to be launching a new membership called the Recurring Revenue School on Jan. 6.

The waitlist is open.

The Balancing Act

This week has been busy. This morning, I'm finally able to exhale a little bit. Over the past couple of weeks, I've been able to make some significant progress up two massive print design projects. It's been hard to focus on anything else. These projects have taken up...
